Thriving Together in the Early Childhood Education Field
Prioritizing Self-Care for Center Directors and their Employees
Welcome📋☺️
Beth arrives each day feeling exhausted, having skipped breakfast to get to work on time. She’s constantly running between activities, redirecting behaviors, and trying to manage the needs of multiple children. She says it’s “just a busy day,” but this becomes her routine.
She is not getting enough sleep because she's up late planning and preparing for her lessons. She has been missing her self-care practices, like exercising or even just enjoying quiet moments to herself. Her energy is drained, and she begins to feel irritable and less patient with the children, something she never used to experience.
As I’ve been visiting various childcare centers, I’ve noticed a concerning trend that keeps surfacing—not just in conversations with teachers, but also with center directors and other leadership. Time and again, I hear similar stories about the emotional and physical toll that the demands of the job are taking on educators and leaders alike and self-care being second or nonexistent.

This week, I want to highlight the importance of prioritizing and recognizing self-care for early childhood educators and leaders. It's not just a "nice-to-have" but a necessity if they are to truly thrive in their roles and support the children they care for. Without self-care, burnout can sneak in, impacting both the well-being of the staff and the quality of care they provide.
How does a person with self-care compare to one who doesn’t prioritize self-care in early childhood education:

As a leader, here are some key strategies to not only prioritize your self-care but also encourage and support it within your team:
1️⃣Model Self-Care Behaviors
For yourself: As a leader, your team will take cues from you. If you prioritize your own well-being, they will feel more comfortable doing the same. Take breaks, set boundaries🚧 for work hours, and maintain a healthy work-life balance⚖️. When you lead by example, it normalizes self-care for your entire team.
For employees: Encourage employees to take time off📆 when they need it and actively support them in doing so. Create a culture where self-care is prioritized and viewed as essential rather than a luxury or an afterthought.
2️⃣Encourage Regular Breaks
For yourself: Schedule📅 time in your calendar for short breaks throughout the day. This helps you avoid burnout and gives you a chance to reset.
For employees: Build break times into the workday, ensuring employees feel they can step away without guilt. It might be for lunch or as simple as a short walk🚶🏽➡️ or to use the bathroom.
3️⃣Create a Supportive Work Environment
For yourself: Surround yourself with people who encourage balance and emotional well-being. Build🏗️a support network with colleagues, mentors, or even peers outside your workplace.
For employees: Foster an environment🪴 where emotional support is available. Have regular check-ins with staff to talk about both their work and well-being. Consider providing access to mental health resources, such as counseling services or employee assistance programs.
4️⃣Recognize and Celebrate Efforts
For yourself: Take time to acknowledge your own successes and reward🏆 yourself for maintaining balance in your life. Self-recognition helps to reinforce healthy habits.
For employees: Regularly recognize and celebrate the achievements of your team. Showing appreciation💗 for their hard work and self-care encourages a positive atmosphere. This can include public acknowledgment, small rewards, or simply saying “thank you” for their dedication.
5️⃣Create Clear Boundaries Between Work and Personal Life
For yourself: Ensure you have distinct boundaries between work and personal life. For example, avoid checking emails📩 after hours or taking work home. This will help you avoid burnout and stay energized for the next day.
For employees: Encourage your team to leave work at work. Let them know that it’s okay to switch off📴 outside of work hours and that taking care of their personal life will ultimately benefit their work performance.
6️⃣Provide Resources for Physical and Mental Health
For yourself: Take care of your own physical and mental health🧠 by engaging in regular exercise, eating well, and taking time to recharge your mental batteries🔋 (e.g., meditation or a hobby).
For employees: Provide resources such as gym memberships, yoga sessions, mindfulness practices, or access to counseling services. Encourage self-care🧘🏽 activities, such as daily journaling prompts📝, posting affirmations, or organizing mindful walking groups during lunch breaks.
By implementing these strategies, you are not only enhancing your own self-care but also fostering a workplace culture that values and supports self-care. This ultimately contributes to the overall well-being of everyone—emotionally, physically, and professionally.
"Self-care is giving the world the best of you, instead of what's left of you."
Self-care is a cornerstone for thriving at work because it empowers employees to be healthier, more focused, and resilient. By integrating self-care into daily routines, employees can boost their productivity, job satisfaction, and emotional well-being, all of which contribute to a thriving, successful work environment.
Till Next time,
