Facing Challenges with Teacher Retention?

Help teachers reconnect with their challenges with teacher retention? Help teacher reconnect with their why.

Welcome😊

Over the past few months, I’ve had the opportunity to work closely with early childhood educators of all ages. Recently, one of them asked me how I got started in childcare and why I continue in this field despite the stress. Her question made me reflect on my own "why" and whether I’ve lost my connection to it. As we spoke, it became clear that this teacher also needed to reconnect with her "why." Her negativity was evident not just in her words, but also in her body language as she walked through the door.

So, I started talking to each of the teachers in the center to learn about their "why." As I helped them reconnect with their purpose, I noticed a positive shift—not only in their mindset but also in teacher retention.

Ways to guide your teachers in reconnecting with their WHY:

  1. Reflect on Your Journey

🤔Ask Yourself: Why did you choose to become an early childhood educator? What drew you to this profession in the first place?

🎬Action: Write down the reasons that motivate you to pursue this career. Was it a love for children, the desire to make a difference in their lives, or a particular experience or mentor that inspired you? Revisiting these initial thoughts will help clarify your deeper motivations.

  2. Identify Your Values

🤔Ask Yourself: What values do I hold most important in my life, and how do they align with my work as an educator?

🎬Action: List the values you prioritize, such as compassion, creativity, patience, equity, or curiosity. Think about how these values play out in your work with children and how they influence your approach to teaching.

  3. Look for Inspiration from Others

🤔Ask Yourself: Who in my life or in the education field inspires me? Why?

🎬Action: Seek out stories, articles, or interviews with other educators who have found deep meaning in their work. Learning about the experiences of others can offer insight and inspiration as you reflect on your own path.

When teachers know their "why" it is a powerful tool in improving teacher retention in early childhood education. When educators have a clear sense of purpose, they are more likely to feel fulfilled, supported, and motivated in their roles, which ultimately leads to greater job satisfaction and longevity in the profession.

3 reasons teachers knowing their “Why” helps with retention:

1️⃣It Increases Job Satisfaction: Teachers who are connected to their personal "why" experience greater fulfillment in their work, making them less likely to leave the profession. When they feel aligned with their purpose, the work becomes more meaningful, which boosts overall job satisfaction. Satisfied teachers are more likely to stay long-term.

2️⃣Stronger Relationships are built with Colleagues: Teachers who know their "why" often have a clearer sense of what drives them, making it easier to collaborate and build supportive relationships with colleagues. Shared values and goals can create a sense of community, where teachers work together toward common objectives and support each other in their efforts.

3️⃣There is a Greater Impact on Society: The role of early childhood educators is foundational in shaping future generations. Knowing their "why" reminds teachers of the critical role they play in preparing children for success in life. This understanding helps them focus on the broader impact they are having, not just in the classroom, but in the lives of children and the communities they serve.

Empowering teachers to reconnect with their "why" of teaching young children is crucial for creating a meaningful and positive impact in early childhood education. When childcare leaders help teachers rediscover their passion and purpose, it benefits not only the educators but also the children in their classroom.

When early childhood educators have a clear sense of their "why," they are more connected to their work, experience greater fulfillment, and are better equipped to handle challenges. A deeper sense of purpose leads to reduced burnout, and a stronger commitment to the profession, all of which contributes to improved teacher retention. When you help your teachers reconnect with their purpose, you can help motivate, engage, other Early childhood educators and leaders create long-term stability in our field.
